University: Sorry, you cannot get in, but you are eligible...

After reading the newspaper, forums, blogs (both Snoookems and Chillycraps) recently about the issue, which is a typical Singaporeans' Complaint:

"Why my son/daughter/niece/newphew/grandmother/dog cannot get into University when they have-slightly-"Above Average"-grades/are-eligible-for-it??"

I couldn't help but to roll my eyes to heavens and thank god I don't know such people...
(Then again, maybe I do, but I usually don't really notice their existence...)

Somebody should ask these parents to do "market research" first...

***
"My daughter is an above-average student who had excelled in sports."

What makes you think that your kids grades are above average??

AVERAGE is NOT equals to (A+E)/2 = C grade...
A, B, E and a C for GP is NOT above average...
Anybody who scored below C (and for some, it's a B) for ONE of their core subject can stop dreaming about entering those competitive courses...

And what has sports got to do with it?!
This is not sports school nia...

_____
"She has met all the criteria for entry to a local university. Is being eligible not enough? Must one now get extraordinary grades to be granted a place in university?"

The answer is YES to those very popular faculties/courses...
You need damn good grades to get in...

Just because you passed the very basic/minimum requirement of the University, it does not guarantee you a place!!!

_____
"Like her, many young Singaporeans her age must have had their dream of pursuing a higher education dashed recently. Ironically, the universities are still advertising for applications."

Wah liao, this is not the classified where employers are looking for workers...
Where got enough number of people liao, so can stop advertising le...

Uncle please go and study the Principles of Marketing...

_____
"Are they looking for A-star performers who have more than one option? Are they raising their standards for applicants so that they will be able to improve their world ranking - just like an elite school or junior college that accepts only the best in Singapore so that ultimately its ranking will be at the top?"

So now it comes to slandering and accusation eh??
But you have no proof that NUS is raising their standards for applicants to improve their world ranking...
(Even though it does seems possible...)

And who in their right mind would accept a mediocre student although eligible over another who has excellent grades??

OF COURSE will accept the best lar!!! Idiot...

_____
"The Minister for Education had said that 'no Singaporean should be deprived of a good education', so what about the many students, like my daughter, who are qualified to enter university after two years of hard slog, only to be told that they had not been selected due to limited vacancies and stiff competition?"

Good education does not necessary means Must Enter University okay..
You looking down on Polytechnics issit??

Then what you expect the MOE to say??
"Sorry, your daughter is dumber then alot of those people, hence we do not select her cos there are many many others better then her..."

As I've said before, of course they will only accept the best!!!

_____
"The Education Ministry should look into this problem with a sense of urgency as it only shows a lack of planning to meet the aspirations of young Singaporeans who want to study for a degree."

You want to study for a degree...
But you must also make sure you are good enough to get one...

Maybe it is time for MOE to reset the eligibility criteria...
"All who scored _ _ _ and above may apply here"
"The rest who scored otherwise but still pass your exams may apply here for the waiting list"

_____
"Local universities are publicly funded. Isn't it about loyalty and kinship that citizens are given a chance to study there as long as they are eligible for entry?"

As long as they are eligible??
That means we must build the fourth, fifth, sixth university to accommodate ALL applicants who are eligible...

Because getting "passes in at least two 'A'-level subjects and attempt General Paper (GP)" and " meet the minimum Mother Tongue Langauge requirement of a D7 at AO-level" is not very difficult wor...

_____
" Are my daughter's grades of an A, B, C (General Paper) and an E not good enough?"

No...

Freaking please stop repeating your whinings??

_____
"My son, who is 27 years old and had A-level grades of A, B and C, graduated with a Second Upper Class Honours degree in the Arts and Social Sciences at NUS."

That is not relevant at all...

In any case, it only shows that your son has better grades then your daughter...
Of course then he would have a higher chance of getting in lar...

But I do think that it would be worthwhile to have another University to catered to those eligible but still cannot get into the University students...
Because it is true that competition is growing around us, all over the world, and we need educated and skilled workers in order to survived...

But then, having too many graduates will lower the value...
-_-;

Okie, due to my own selfish reasons, it would be better not to have too many university...
Hiak hiak hiak...

My Dad is abit different then normal parents...

Two years ago (That is so long ago!!! Oh man, I'm getting old), my Dad was having a conversation with his friends...

*roughly translated from chinese and from memory*

Dad: Oh my daughter 'A' level results are coming out!! Dunno can get into University anot...

Friend: Sure can one lar... Your daughter very smart one...

Dad: Really meh?!?! What if cannot get in huh??

Friend: Can one lar... Your daughter will score very well one lar...

Dad: Very hard to say lor... She always complained homework very difficult...

Friend: How about this... We make a bet on whether your daughter score good grades anot, want??

And then a few days later, after receiving my 'A' level results, my Dad complained that I have just made him lose a bet to his friend and have to treat him to lunch...
